A Case Study

On December 11, 2024, the Minnesota Hospital Association sponsored a one-day seminar titled Safe Workplaces: Strategies for Violence Prevention in Healthcare

From the Seminar Brochure:

This is a case study of one academic medical center’s journey to change culture by taking a proactive and integrated approach to workplace violence and conflict management. By implementing a program that focuses on treating people, staff, patients, and visitors alike, with dignity by showing respect, we embarked on implementing an evidence-based workplace conflict management program. The initial outcomes included a reduction in the incidence of behavioral restraints and seclusion and a reduction in worker’s compensation-related costs and injuries associated with workplace violence reports.

Learning Objectives:

  • Differentiate between a preventative approach and de-escalation and self-defense training.
  • Evaluate elements of a holistic workplace conflict management program to change culture in healthcare.
